I am very interested to see this opportunity for us to share information and have questions asked, discussed and hopefully answered, Thanks for this opportunity.

Excited to talk to students/parents again this year and see what is going on with them one year out!  Getting all my stuff together now to begin to make calls!

Great idea, Tony, Judy, and Beth!  I look forward to seeing this blog grow!

Recently a question was asked if home school children should be included in YOYO Data.  At this time we are NOT collecting this data.

I wish the basic KISTS information (student ID, disability, b-day, etc) we put in one year would save over to YOYO the next year. Those are the same kids we are interviewing a year later.

Question: If you put a student ID in, can it be deleted?
  • Judy Johns 06 Jun

We are working on getting the demographic information to pre-populate....just not there yet.

For security reasons we can’t delete anything from the main database until the window is over (July 31) and we begin cleaning the data for analysis.  We always have duplicate entries, and our policy is to delete whichever was entered first and keep the newest one unless you tell us to do otherwise.

There are two of us here in our district conducting the YoYo interviews.  I am not able to view the information that the other interviewer has input and vice-versa.  Why is this since we are entering information for the same district?
  • Judy Johns 22 Jun

That was set up for confidentiality reasons.  Yoyo interviews may or may not be persons authorized to have access to sensitive student information.  We recommend conferring with one another to determine who needs help completing their interviews, or to only interview those students assigned to you by your DOSE.

I want to make sure that you all have the necessary information to complete the two instruments that the Kentucky Post School Outcomes Center utilizes for post-secondary transition.  Both are required by KDE every year for every district. The instruments are:

    1)      The Kentucky Is School Transition Survey (KISTS).  This is done on all currently exiting students with IEP’s.  There are two parts: the Record Review (completed by the KISTS Coordinator, designated by the DOSE, and the Student Survey (completed by the exiting student).  The KISTS is open year round, but needs to be completed by June 30th of the exiting students’ year. (July 30th this year only)

    2)      The Youth One Year Out (YOYO) former student interview. This is conducted by trained interviewers (designated by the DOSE) on students with IEP’s who exited your LEA last school year (2009-10).  The YOYO is open from April 1 – June 30 each year.  (July 30th this year only)

Training for both the KISTS & YOYO are available at our website, www.kypso.org by clicking “Data Collection.” Users will need to register for an account, and then can view both training modules and instructional videos that fully describe how and why each instrument is administered. As a DOSE, you will also be able to monitor entries made to both instruments. User accounts created last year should still work this year.

The most common question we receive regarding each instrument is about what students participate in each instrument.  The answer is to use exiting data to determine this.  All students with IEP’s who are included in your district’s exiting data (minus those who returned to general education, moved or died) are to be given the KISTS (if exit was in 2010-11) or YOYO (if exit was in 2009-10). In cases in which a currently exiting student is not available to do a KISTS Student Survey, a Record Review should still be completed.  We realize that not all former students will be able to be contacted for YOYO’s, however it is required to make an attempt to contact each, and fill out demographic information on the YOYO as well as to note the attempted contact(s).

Both instruments are available online at www.kypso.org under “Data Collection.” The KISTS Student Survey is also available under the “Students” tab.

If you have questions about the instruments, user accounts or anything related please contact Judy Johns at judy.johns@uky.edu or myself at tflobi1@uky.edu.

Thank you for your help as we aim to improve transition outcomes for students in Kentucky!

    Greetings KyPSO partners!

Exciting changes are coming to our data collection system this school year.  Have no fear – they should all make your jobs easier!

The Kentucky In School Transition Survey (both the Record Review section and the Student Survey section) as of this school year will NO LONGER EXIST.  That means that there is no reason to worry about collecting this information for currently exiting students.  The online instruments are closed, and there is no need to be trained through the KISTS training modules or quiz (in fact, these will be removed soon).

We are not abandoning our research into in-school factors which are predictive of post-school success.  We are just finding more efficient ways to get this information.  Most of the information contained in the Record Review is also available through Infinite Campus, and we believe that we now have a way to access what we need from this source directly (thanks, in a large part, to much of your feedback).  As for the information formerly obtained through the Student Survey, if all goes as is being planned, these items will be moved to the Senior Survey within the ILP.  This of course makes this document even more important, and while there are still many logistics to be worked out we feel confident that the information gathered via this manner will be just as useful, if not more so than the previous KISTS.

The Youth One Year Out former student Interview (YOYO) is still required of every district, every year, on every student with an IEP who exited the previous school year by means of graduation, certificate, aging out or dropping out.  However, there will be some changes regarding this instrument as well.  For one thing, we are working to shorten it – there will be fewer questions, and the questions should be worded in a way that will be more intuitive to select an answer.  AND (this is my favorite part) the instrument should automatically tell you who you need to call.  For instance, when you log in as a certified YOYO Interviewer from Pleasantville Schools, you should see all of the former students (I’m not sure if we’ll go by names or student ID numbers) listed that you need to call, and then you’ll just click on their line and start the interview!

This won’t go live until the usual reporting window begins (April 1), and we’ll provide much training before then (and, I’m sure work out many bugs in the system).  For now I was most interested in letting you know about the KISTS, but I couldn’t resist writing a few words about the YOYO as well!

As always, thank you all for your ongoing help.  We will continue to be in touch as the YOYO reporting period gets closer.

    -Tony
